Questions parents ask about online chess classes
Short, plain answers about how our classes work: who can join, what you need, what it costs, and how we keep children safe.
Getting started
My child has never played chess. Can they join?
Yes. The journey starts with the board itself and how each piece moves. Most of our youngest students start from zero.
What happens in the free demo class?
A 30-minute online class on Microsoft Teams: a short, fun lesson with a coach and a quick check of your child's level. Afterwards we suggest the right batch and timing. There is no payment and no obligation. Book a free demo
What age should a child start learning chess?
Children can start from around 5 years old, once they can sit and focus for a short lesson. Our Explorer mode is designed for ages 5 to 12, and teens and adults have their own modes.
Are your chess classes online or offline?
All our classes are live and online, on Microsoft Teams, so your child can learn from home anywhere in India or abroad. You only need a laptop or tablet and internet.
Which languages do you teach in?
Live classes are taught in English, Telugu or Hindi. Chess terms like fork, pin and castling are taught in English, as they are used in every tournament, and explained in your child's language. Pick your language when you book the demo.
How much do online chess classes cost?
Playing and daily puzzles are free forever and the demo class is free. Live coaching is a monthly plan; you can see the current price on our fees page before you pay anything. See fees and plans
Will I get updates on my child's progress?
Yes. Parents get progress updates on WhatsApp in the language they choose, and a dashboard with lessons, puzzles, games, homework and attendance.
Do you offer a sibling discount?
Yes. Each child needs their own plan. From the second child, live coaching is 10% off, applied automatically at checkout.
What do we need for online classes?
A laptop or tablet (a phone works, but the board is small), a stable internet connection and earphones with a mic.
Is it safe for my child?
Coaches follow our curriculum and a child-safety code. Parents set up the account, young children log in with a username and PIN instead of an email, and we only ask for the details we need to teach. Read the Child Safety Policy
How do payments and refunds work?
Payments are processed securely by Razorpay; we never see your card details. Our refund and cancellation policy is published on this website. Read the refund policy
Classes, batches and timings
How many children are in one class?
Live classes are taught in small batches of up to 10 children who are at a similar level and age.
What are the class timings?
Each batch has two fixed days and one fixed time every week. After the demo class we suggest a batch for your child's level, age and language, and you pick from the batch times that are open.
How long is each class?
Each live class is 60 minutes. It follows the same plan every time: a short homework review, a new idea, puzzles solved together, a short game and a recap with homework. See how a class runs
Is there homework?
Yes. Every lesson has 5 homework puzzles on the website and a small task, such as playing a game. The coach looks at the homework at the start of the next class.
Can my child start at a higher level?
For live classes, yes. The coach checks your child's level in the free demo and suggests a batch at that level. In the self-learning course on the website, levels open in order from Level 1.
Can my child learn without live classes?
Yes. Level 1 of the course is free with a free account. The Self-learning plan opens all the levels to follow at your child's own pace. Compare the plans
The course, tests and certificates
How is the chess course organised?
The course has 5 stages, 7 levels and 98 lessons, from how the pieces move to getting ready for rated tournaments. Every lesson has 10 practice puzzles and 5 homework puzzles. See the full curriculum
Are there tests?
Yes. Every level ends with a test of 20 questions. The pass mark is 16 out of 20. A child who does not pass can try again after 24 hours, with a new set of questions. How level tests work
Does my child get a certificate?
Yes. Passing a level test gives a certificate for that level, with its own number. Anyone can check a certificate on our website using that number, and it can be saved as a PDF.
Can lessons be read in Hindi or Telugu?
Yes. Lessons on the website can be read in English, Hindi or Telugu, and our chess articles are published in all three languages. Read our chess articles
Devices
Do we need to install anything for the demo class?
No. We send the Microsoft Teams link by email and WhatsApp, and it opens in the browser.
Can my child use a phone?
The website works in the browser on a phone, tablet or laptop. For live classes a laptop or tablet is better, because the chess board is bigger.
Fees, payments and refunds
Is the demo class really free?
Yes. The demo class is free and you do not need to give any payment details to book it. Book a free demo
What if we pay and my child does not like the classes?
Tell us within 2 days of your first payment and we refund that first payment in full. This applies to both live coaching and the self-learning plan, once for each student. Read the refund policy
Do plans renew by themselves?
No. Plans are paid in advance for the period you choose and do not renew by themselves. If you do not pay for the next period, the plan simply ends. We remind you before it ends. See monthly and yearly plan rules
What happens if my child misses a class?
A missed class counts as attended and is not refunded or made up. We share the homework, and the class recording where there is one, and the coach reviews the homework at the next class. See missed class rules
What happens if the coach cancels a class?
The class is moved to another time or credited to your next period. You never lose a class that we cancel.
Can we pause the classes for exams or travel?
Yes. Live coaching students can pause their plan for up to 1 month in every 6 months, with at least 7 days' notice. The paused time is added to the end of your plan, and we keep your child's place in the batch where possible. See how pausing works
Is there a discount for a second child?
Yes. Each child needs their own plan. From the second child, live coaching is 10% off. It is applied automatically at checkout: choose the child on the Plans page and you will see the lower price.
How do we pay?
Payments are processed securely by Razorpay. We never see your card details. A receipt is emailed for every payment.
We live outside India. What price do we pay?
Families in India see prices in rupees. Families anywhere else see prices in US dollars. The website picks this from the time zone set on your device, and the price is shown before you pay anything.
How do I ask for a refund?
Email accounts@daizenchesschamps.com with the parent's registered mobile number, the student's name, the plan, the payment date and the reason. We reply within 48 hours and confirm the decision within 5 working days. Approved refunds go back to the way you paid, usually in 5 to 7 working days. See how to request a refund
Child safety
How do you check your coaches?
Before a coach teaches our students we take a signed self-declaration, call two references, hold an interview and watch a demo class, and the coach signs our child-safety code of conduct. How we choose and check coaches
Are classes recorded?
With the consent parents give at sign-up, classes may be recorded for student safety, quality checks and revision. Recordings are shared only with students of that batch, their parents and our staff, and are kept for 90 days unless needed longer to resolve a complaint.
Can a coach message my child privately?
No. Coaches talk to students in class, and through the website or official channels where a parent is included. Homework, feedback and schedule changes go to the parent or through the website.
Can I sit with my child during class?
Yes. Parents are welcome to stay nearby during class, and we encourage it for younger children.
How do I report a worry about safety?
Email hello@daizenchesschamps.com with the subject "Child safety", or message us on WhatsApp at +91 96183 99255. You do not need proof. If a child is in immediate danger, call the police (112) or the Child Helpline (1098) first. Read the Child Safety Policy
Tournaments
Do you run chess tournaments?
Yes. We run online chess tournaments. You register on the tournaments page, play live games round by round, and winners earn digital certificates. There are no cash prizes or gifts. See tournaments
Is there an entry fee for tournaments?
Any entry fee is shown on the tournament's page before you register. For paid tournaments, the fee is refunded if you withdraw at least 48 hours before the start, and in full if we cancel the tournament.
Will the course get my child ready for rated tournaments?
That is the goal of the last level. Level 7 covers using the clock, tournament rules and analysing your own games. See Level 7
Families outside India
Can children outside India join?
Yes. All classes are online, so children can join from any country.
How do time zones work?
Demo class times, and the times of batches that are open, are shown in the time zone of your own device, so you do not have to convert from India time.
